This winter employees at Joy Global’s Milwaukee facility expressed a desire to help Milwaukee’s homeless population by conducting a hat and glove drive. Donations were accepted both before and after the holidays and it didn’t take long for boxes and bags to fill up with new hats and gloves while several departments took up collections to buy supplies. In the end, over 300 pairs of hats and gloves were collected for those in need.
With such generosity Joy Global and its employees were able to help three organizations serving the Milwaukee community. To start, over 30 employees assembled 150 care bags for Milwaukee’s homeless in less than 15 minutes. The back packs not only included the hats and gloves but also a pair of wool socks, a reusable water bottle, a bag of assorted snacks and a bag of toiletry items including deodorant, a toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues, chap stick and a first aid kit which were donated by the company. These bags will be donated to a group of volunteers who will conduct the first of two “Point-in-Time” counts of the homeless in the city the evening of January 27. This count is done nationwide to determine the number of homeless people and identify the unmet needs of those on the streets, in transitional housing and shelters. Volunteers will canvas the city to count those who are homeless and on the street. They’ll meet one-on-one with members of the homeless population to understand their stories and needs. At any given time it is estimated that over 1500 people are homeless in Milwaukee.
In addition to supporting this effort to reach the neediest members of our community, the success of the drive made it possible for two other organizations to receive hats and gloves. Donations will be made to the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center which is located just blocks away from Joy Global and The Guest House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter, housing, education and services to Milwaukee’s homeless who seek to transform their lives with dignity and purpose.
Addressing the needs of the communities in which we operate is part of Joy Global’s commitment to social responsibility. Employees have long been passionate about working to satisfy basic human needs through volunteer work and financial support.
